Countdown to 2027
The Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture is an international cultural initiative whose aim is to showcase and preserve the cultural heritage of the Finno-Ugric peoples. The title is awarded to a different municipality each year — in 2027 it is held by Geresdlak, a village in Baranya County that has maintained close ties with Finland for two decades.
The 2026 title was held by Hancock, Michigan, in the United States — the first Finno-Ugric capital of culture outside Europe. The 2027 winner, Geresdlak, was announced at the Hancock Midsummer (Juhannus) celebration. Thus, the baton returns from North America to Europe, to a small Hungarian village.
